    Elastomer, any rubbery material composed of long chainlike molecules, or polymers, that are capable of recovering their original shape after being stretched to great extents—hence the name elastomer, from “elastic polymer.”Under normal conditions the long molecules making up an elastomeric material are irregularly coiled. With the application of force, however, the molecules straighten. Starting from microstructure and physical properties, the book covers the mechanical, chemical and electrical properties of plastic materials, and also deals in detail with wider plastics issues that today’s engineers and materials scientists need such as manufacturing processes and .

    An elastomer is a polymer with viscoelasticity (i.e., both viscosity and elasticity) and has very weak intermolecular forces, generally low Young's modulus and high failure strain compared with other materials. The term, a portmanteau of elastic polymer, is often used interchangeably with rubber, although the latter is preferred when referring to vulcanisates.   Plasticizing a high-damping elastomer (butyl or NBR) can make it more susceptible to ozone attack at room temperature (ref. 4). In oxygen atmospheres, increasing temperature roughly doubles the rate of oxidation for every 10 [degrees] C. Increasing temperature is a common method to accelerate the simulated oxidative aging of elastomers.
