The year is so important, so vital to the course of European history, but somehow we manage to reduce it to “the Battle of Hastings.” That is largely what I was expecting with this short 1066 by David Howarth, a popular historian better known for his takes on more recent history, including World War II and the Battle of Trafalgar/5.
This is a surprisingly short but easily readable account of the year which covers all of the major points in detail. It is written in a narrative, often poetic style describing the events of the year month by month.
